I want to talk about meditation, moving forward, + Zenme. It’s my ultimate quarantine hack for staying sane, not hating on myself, and knowing I can still thrive in the midst of chaos. Okay, here we go!
Have you been feeling a little bit stressed?
Like many others, this pandemic has sent me through a spiral of emotions. It’s completely changed my life and daily routine. Some days it’s easy to stay motivated and determined while other days I feel completely over everything. I’ve been living in my hometown in Florida since the pandemic got out of hand in March. I was living in Spain from the beginning of the year and had ended the lease of my apartment in New York City before leaving for there. I had no idea that I would be in Florida for this long, because I was sure that things would get better or at least be more predictable. My time in quarantine has been a mixture of productivity, sadness, relief, happiness, loneliness and so much more. I think that the hardest thing for me is social distancing. I find that I get so much energy from being around people and I miss hugging people. Of course, I can still see people from time to time, but I want to keep a safe distance, so the virus doesn’t spread.
As I’ve been forced to sit with uncomfortable and sometimes negative feelings during the pandemic, I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve thought about everything that has happened in my life and much of it has really gone unplanned. Sure, I have goals and ideas, but life usually ends up happening and being just a little bit different. And that’s OK. Maybe you’re wondering why I would be okay with this? My one-word answer is meditation.
What are the benefits of meditation?
Meditation is process-oriented instead of results-oriented. I’m a recovering perfectionist, so I’ve been very results oriented type of person. However, meditation has helped me become more process oriented and the benefits of the result have left me with so much more, when I am 100% there for the process. When I come to think about it, it can be strange that sometimes as humans we can get so distracted by a goal that we miss the moment. Mediation allows me to enjoy what is happening here right now. There are so many benefits to mediation which include stress reduction, lessened anxiety, better attention span + emotional wellbeing, as well as cultivating self-awareness. However, meditation can sound a little daunting or unappealing if you’ve never done it and that’s why I decided to take a guided meditation with Zenme to get myself back into it. Even though I love to do yoga every day, I will admit it has been a while since I sat down and did a proper meditation.
What is Zenme?
Zenme personalizes your very own 10-minute meditation or a 30-minute yoga nidra. When I scheduled my 10-minute mediation, I was asked what I would like to get out of it. I said I would like to stay more focused on my tasks, since it’s been difficult to feel happy all of the time in quarantine. Sometimes that gets me in a rut, and I want to effortlessly to do my tasks with ease. Zenme completely personalized my meditation around focus and it was such a game changer! The best part is that you can do the meditation from anywhere in the world, all you need is a computer or phone to listen to your very own meditation live. I did mine over google hangouts and sat down on my yoga mat in my room. Melanie introduced the meditation with a very calming voice. The reason why I love guided meditation is because it easily drowns out the chatter from my own mind and redirects my focus to what is being said and how I can apply it to myself. She had me focus on the duality of the breath. I slowly became more mindful of each inhale and exhale. Once I was present with my breath, I inhaled and exhaled mantras in my head:
“I am powerful” – inhale “I am safe” – exhale
How was the Zenme meditation?
Inhaling and exhaling these mantras made me feel invincible and that I am capable of so much. This made me realize that I can access these energies at any time with my breath. Whenever I feel down about myself and have trouble focusing on my tasks, I can always take my power back, breath, and continue with mindful action. The details of the meditation also made me appreciate myself more. As I sat with a tall spine, I was told to ground down and feel the weight of myself on the floor and the atmosphere on my skin. This made me see my own presence in the world from a bird’s eye view. It also made me feel connected to the earth and that no matter what happens I am always supported by the foundation and breath. I also think that meditation is a good way to love and romanticize yourself and feel the sensations of your own breath on your body. When I breathed out, I was told to feel the air on my upper lip. It made me grateful for the ‘little’ details of myself and made me notice the power of the breath.
What are the effects of a Zenme Meditation?
At the end of the meditation, I felt completely renewed with a newfound appreciation for myself and my own abilities. It was only 10 minutes out of my day, but those 10 minutes served me well for the remainder of the day and even the week. Each time I feel stress or a doubt around doing a task, I remember my breath and that no matter what I do, I am powerful and I am safe. It has reminded me that I can always give up, but I deserve to do more and reach my highest potential. I’ve noticed that since this meditation, I have been attracting more positive things in my life. My blog has been growing, I’ve been more consistent with my passions, and I don’t let the negative things weigh me down so much. Whenever I feel like I’m getting off course, I think of my breath and my Zenme meditation. Even writing this article about it is calming me down and reminding me!
