Hi there! My name is Hannah Updegraff. Welcome to my wellness blog where I combine my food and feelings! I’m the content creator, recipe developer, chef, and photographer behind the Heartbeet. I’m NYC based, drink matcha every morning, and love to travel. On my blog, you will find plant-based recipes that are gluten-free and dairy-free. I also share my relationship to food and how it’s evolved into something beautiful.
In addition to the Heartbeet, I’m a certified health coach and vinyasa yoga and meditation teacher. The mind-body connection is one of my biggest passions along with style, vintage Chanel, and interior design.
I found my love for health and wellness after many years of struggling with body dysmorphia and eating responses. I used to be a fashion model for top agencies in Los Angeles and Tokyo. There was a lot I loved about modeling and I worked for clients like Italian Vogue, Jeffrey Campbell, and Teen Vogue. However, the pressures of the modeling industry became too much for me to handle between experiencing loss and maintaining measurements that were unrealistic for my body.
In 2014, I decided to enroll in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in the hopes to achieve health and balance in my lifestyle. After a year of learning about holistic health and wellness I decided to leave to modeling industry. I enrolled in culinary school at the Natural Gourmet Institute to help heal my relationship to food.
After I decided to leave modeling I wasn’t happy for a long time, but now I can say I’m in the happiest place I’ve ever been. The shift happened for me when I realized food can be so much more than food itself. I gave up alcohol and a career and relationships that weren’t serving me; and I went from obsessing about food to playing with food.
I notice many parallels between cooking and fashion. This makes me excited to eat food because I can incorporate my own style. And I love making food pink! Leading a mostly plant-based lifestyle also makes me happy for the environmental reasons and I truly believe that what we put into our bodies can influence our feelings and vice versa. I love to eat intuitively and it’s my purpose to spread love, light, and inspiration. Everything on the Heartbeet comes straight from my heart. ❤
